Redskins Split Air Capital Opener

The Liberal Redskins opened their baseball season Friday afternoon at Maize High School.  Liberal played Ark City and Newton as part of the Air Capital Classic.  In game one, Ark City topped Liberal 8-5.  The Skins came out swinging in game two beating Newton 18-12.

In the game with Ark City, the Bulldogs scored three in the first and three in the fourth.  The Redskins plated three in the eighth.  The Bulldogs tacked on two more in the sixth to lead 8-3.  LHS scored two in the seventh.  Liberal out-hit Ark City 10-7.  Liberal had three errors and the Bulldogs had one.  Eathan Hernandez, Ethan Olmstead, and Blayden Betts had two hits a piece.  Blayden Betts hit a double.  Blayden Betts pitched three innings allowing four earned runs. Kale Miller pitched three innings allowing two earned runs.

In game two against the Newton Railers, both teams scored one run in the first and three in the second. Newton scored two in the third to lead 6-4.  The Skins scored six in the bottom of the third to lead 10-6. Newton scored a fourth inning run to lead 10-7.  LHS scored two in the bottom of the fourth to lead 12-7.  The Railers scored five unearned runs in the top of the fifth to tie it 12-12.  Liberal scored two in the bottom of the fifth to lead 14-12.  Liberal added four in the sixth for an 18-12 lead.  Liberal out-hit Newton 10-9.  Newton committed eight errors and LHS had five.  Eathan Hernandez, Bren Kappelmann, and Blayden Betts had two hits a piece.  Kappelmann had two RBI’s and two runs.  Hernandez scored three runs.  Jonathan Santos drove home four.  Bentlee Betts picked up the Redskins in relief going 2 and 1/3 scoreless.
The Redskins play at Holcomb Tuesday for a double header at 4pm.
