It was a pitcher’s dual followed by a pitcher’s nightmare Thursday afternoon and evening at Brent Gould Field in Liberal. Seward won the first game over the visiting Pratt Beavers 4-0 behind a combined shutout by Michael Lujan and Braden Whipple. The Saints rallied from 8-0 down in game two to win 22-16 in a game that finished at 8:11 PM and under the lights. In that game Seward won despite walking 11 and hitting nine Pratt hitters. Pratt walked 11 and hit six SCCC hitters.
The Saints scored one in the first when Blaine Chancy rolled a single through the right side to score Grant Cox. Hayden Ramage whistled a two out RBI double to left center in the fourth to make it 2-0. Ryan Todd lifted a towering home run to left for the 3-0 lead in the fifth. Juan Alvarez tripled to center to lead off the sixth. David Brabb lined an RBI double to right center for the 4-0 lead. Michael Lujan pitched five shutout innings allowing two hits. He struck out five and walked five and is Black Hills Energy Player of the Game. Braden Whipple worked two scoreless for his second save. Grant Cox had two hits. SCCC out hit PCC 8-3.
In game two, Pratt scored one in the first and seven in the second. SCCC scored six in the bottom of the second. Mason Gilbert singled home one and Grant Cox singled home two. Blaine Chancy doubled home a pair. Pratt responded with a five run third to lead 13-6. Jacob Urias singled and scored on a sac fly by Khale Leblanc in the bottom of the third to make it 13-7. The Saints scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Diego Munoz lofted his first home run of the season off the scoreboard in left center to mae it 13-9. Jacob Urias ripped a double to left. Jhett Huffman rolled a single up the middle to score him. After back to back hit batters, Grant Cox walked with the bases loaded to make it 13-11 after four. The Beavers plated one in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 16-11 lead going to the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Mason Gilbert singled home a run to make it 16-12. A Grant Cox RBI single made the score 16-13. A Hayden Ramage sac fly in foul ground to left made it 16-14. That was the score until the Pratt bullpen fell apart in the bottom of the eighth. After three walks, the Saints loaded the bases with one out. Diego Munoz and Jacob Urias were hit by pitched with the bases loaded to tie the game at 16-16. A Mason Gilbert infield single dribbling down the third baseline gave the Saints their first lead at 17-16. Garrett Fuentes, Grant Cox, and Juan Alvarez walked with the bases loaded to make it 20-16. Hayden Ramage lined a two RBI single to center to make it 22-16. Jacob Urias was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game going 3-4 with five runs. Mason Gilbert was 3-4 with three runs and three RBI’s. Grant Cox, Juan Alvarez, and Jhett Huffman each had two hits and three runs. Seward struggled on the mound walking 11 and hitting nine Pratt batters. Nick Moe-Oaks was solid out of the pen eating up four innings allowing three runs. Cross Durham got the win going 2 and 1/3 scoreless with three strikeouts and no walks.
Pratt has lost 18 in a row and falls to 5-21 overall and 0-10 in the Jayhawk West. Seward is 13-18 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk West. The same two teams play Saturday at 1pm at Stanion Field in Pratt. The games air on 1270 and 92.3 FM. Pregame at 12:45.
