A Head Scratching Split for Skins

The Liberal baseball team rolled to a game one win in an 11-0 run rule Friday afternoon at the National Beef Sports Complex.  Only to see the Wichita North Redhawks rally to stun Liberal 10-9 in game two for the split of the twin-bill.

In game one, the Redskins came out swinging scoring in every inning.  They scored one in the first, one in the second, five in the third, and four in the fourth.  Zayden Martinez pitched four solid innings for the win.  Alex Schwindt closed it out on the mound.  Brooks Kappelmann was 2-4 with a triple and two runs.  Adan Mata and Erek Lira had two hits a piece.  Adan Mata, Landon Martinez, and Marco Allonso had two hits a piece.  Liberal out-hit North 11-2 while the Redhawks committed four errors and Liberal had one.

Game two was a sloppy affair as the teams combined for 10 errors.  North won despite six errors and Liberal had four errors.  LHS pitching hit five batters and walked four.  In the first, North scored two and Liberal scored three.  Both teams scored in the second for a 4-3 LHS lead.  The skins scored two in the third to lead 6-3 after three. The Redhawks scored three in the fourth to tie it at 6-6.  The Redskins scored one in the fourth to lead 7-6.  The Skins fell apart on the mound and in the field in the fifth inning allowing four Redhawks runs as North took the 10-7 lead.  The Redskins rallied in the bottom of the seventh scoring two to make it 10-9.  The bases were loaded with the tying run on third and the winning run on second when Liberal popped out to first to end the game.  Brooks Kappelmann was 4-4 with a triple, two RBI’s, and two runs.  North out-hit Liberal 11-7.  Erek Lira pitched 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

North is 3-10 and Liberal is 8-5.  The Redskins play at Russell Monday at 3pm.
