Seward Women Corral Coffeyville

LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward women’s soccer has its most conference wins in program history just three games into league play.

The Saints (3-1-0, 2-1-0 KJCCC) reached two wins under first year head coach Marcela Bueno with a 2-1 win over Coffeyville (1-6-1, 0-3-0) on Wednesday evening. The two conference wins are already more than the Saints reached in the first two years of the program, winning one each.

Seward did its scoring early as both goals came within the first 10:25 of the game. Julia Astrath headed in a corner kick from Ericka Castillo two minutes into the game to make it 1-0. It was Astrath’s fourth goal of the season which is tied for second in the Jayhawk Conference.

Castillo scored a goal of her own on a free kick in the 10th minute to put the Saints ahead 2-0.

Coffeyville scored its goal in the 75th minute to pull within one but the Saints held them off to secure the win.

Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Benck finished with five saves including an impressive one-on-one save as a Red Raven broke away in the open field.

Seward outshot Coffeyville 19-10 in the game with Astrath leading the way shooting six times, two on goal.

The Saints now hit the road for the first time in conference play, heading to Hutchinson on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game with the Blue Dragons.
