What just happened. That had to be on the minds of all the players, coaches, and fans Wednesday evening at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex. Two goals in the final minute tied the game before Wichita Northwest netted the decisive goal for a 3-2 win over LHS in the 6A regional.
Nicole Catalan scored first to give Liberal the 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies tied the game at 1-1 with seven minutes remaining in the half. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime. Northwest took the early lead in the second half 2-1. It was 2-1 Grizzlies with 1:15 left in the game before Lily Guy netted her 30th goal of the season when the Northwest keeper left the goal and Lily Guy dribbled in for the tying score. But Northwest scored seconds later to take the 3-2 advantage.
Northwest advances and is 7-9-1 and Liberal finishes 9-7-1. This marks two straight winning records for LHS after they never had a winning record until last year.
