Liberal Police Department to Implement Cadet Program

Joe Denoyer - July 7, 2022 11:59 am

The Liberal Police Department will be implementing a Cadet Program later this summer.
The role of a police cadet program is to provide an apprenticeship for people 15-20 years of age, who are interested in a future career in law enforcement. Cadet programs are designed to transition the cadet into regular police officers upon reaching 21 years old.

The police cadet attends a weekly abbreviated academy and learns various aspects of law enforcement including; basic police patrol procedures, cultural awareness, investigations, community policing, crime scene, life saving techniques, laws and ordinances, traffic control, accident investigation and more.
Upon graduation of the cadet academy, cadets are expected to participate in several police department functions during the year such as city parades, Liberal Night Out, Shop with a Cop and the Haunted Trail. The police cadet is also allowed to ride as an observer in a police car with an officer where they will learn first-hand proper police procedures.
Police cadets wear a different uniform than police officers and are not authorized to make arrests or issue citations but this experience and education is invaluable if you aspire a career in public safety. The idea of the cadet program is to provide law enforcement experience to individuals and to provide possible career opportunities to them in the future.

The requirements for enrolling are as follows:
High School or GED graduate or be a student maintaining a 2.0 GPA or higher.
Must have no arrests
Must be able to pass a background investigation and interview.
Contact the Liberal Police Department Community Policing Unit or Lt Daisey Barkley at (620) 626-0141 or [email protected]

Cadet academy begins August 29th 2022
