Lady Red Takes Round One with Dodge City

The #10 Liberal Lady Redskins beat the #8 Dodge City Lady Demons 49-47 Friday night in the Big House.  Liberal led by 13 with 2:50 remaining and then held on to improve to 4-0 in the WAC.

Dodge City took an 8-5 lead after one quarter.  Liberal outplayed Dodge City out pacing them 15-4 in the second quarter as the Lady Redskins burst into their locker room with a 49-47 lead.  Liberal led 31-21 with 1:14 to play in the third quarter and 33-23 with 36.9 to go in the third.  The Lady Red led 36-23 after three.  Liberal led 40-29 early in the fourth and seemed to be in control 44-31 with 2:50 remaining.  Liberal led 44-34 with 2:02 to go.  Dodge City’s full court press gave Liberal issues in the closing minutes as the Lady Demons used a 10-0 run to cut the Liberal led to 44-41 with 44.9 seconds remaining.  Liberal led 48-43 with 26 seconds left.  Dodge City made a basket in the closing seconds but Liberal did not need to inbound the ball.

Liberal forced 20 turnovers but committed 19 turnovers.  Liberal shot 40 percent and DCHS shot 50 percent.  However, the Lady Demons were just 1-9 from three point range while LHS was 5-20 from three.  Dodge was 10-11 at the foul line and Liberal was 14-19.

Ashley Carrillo scored 22 points on 7-14 shooting.  Bree Horyna added 14 points with eight rebounds.

Liberal is 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Dodge City is 8-2 overall and 0-1 in the WAC.  Liberal opens play in the Salina Invitational Tournament Thursday at 6 at Salina South.  The game will air on 1270, 92.3, and the KSCB and The Legend App.
