LHS Girls Tennis Season Ends

Brock Kappelmann - October 11, 2020 9:15 pm

From Coach Bret Irby:

The Lady Redskins finished their season on Saturday at Regionals hosted by Wichita North.  Our first match was an action-packed event featuring our doubles team of Katie Classen and Aracely Jurado.  They were a #14 seed going up against a State qualifying team and #3 seeded team of Henson/Davis from Hutchinson.  Both teams executed fundamentally-sound shots resulting in a slam at the net for every point. Fans and coaches cheered as the score was tied 4-4.  The team from Hutch ended up winning the match and qualifying for State, but it was a very close match.  Our other doubles team of Riddhi Bombaywala and Brianna Sanders battled a familiar foe in Garden City’s Chappel and Nanninga losing 6-1 and 6-2.  On the singles side, LHS upset two top seeded opponents to move to the second round.  Senior, Priscilla Vasquez dominated her opponent, Caitlyn Gilbert from Salina South winning 6-0 and 6-0.  She lost to the #2 Seed, Foster of Hutchinson to end her year.  LHS junior, Jaciana Rivera avenged two earlier losses to Dodge City’s Sammy Nguyen in an exciting 2 hour match winning a super tiebreaker 10-3 to advance to play the #1 seed, Sage Riggs from Garden City.  Rivera lost the match but gained the respect from other coaches and will return next year to lead our squad.
