Jayhawk Conference Statement on Athletic Activities

Due to the on-going developments related to COVID-19, on March 16 the NJCAA announced the cancellation of all athletic activities, including practices and games, for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.  Members of the Executive Committee of the Jayhawk Conference have been meeting regularly to develop a plan for the conferences to begin a return to athletics.

Recently, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly released a plan to reopen Kansas in phases, which the Executive Committee used to help develop the following guidelines for its member schcools that shall be in place through June 30.

1. No in person athletic contact with student athletes.  This includes conditioning, weight training, practice individual skill training, etc.

2. Virtual or on-line supervised workouts are allowed.

3. It is permissible to provide non athletically related support to student athletes including academic, mental health, and wellness support.

“The safety and well being of our member colleges and student athletes is of the utmost importance,” state KJCCC Commissioner Carl Heinrich. “We will continue to monitor the situation and work to put a plan in place that allows our schools to return to practice and games in a way that keeps our student athletes, coaches, schools, and communities safe. ”

The Executive Committee will continue to monitor developments regarding COVID-19 and will make an announcement no later than June 15 regarding further plans for the conference to return to athletics after June 30.  Additional updates will be provided as more information is available.
