Bee Jays Beat Fort Worth on Night to Remember Kaiser

Brock Kappelmann - August 3, 2016 7:14 am

KC shirts aren’t hard to find around Kansas.  Royals fans are abundant in the Sunflower State.  But Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, light blue KC shirts were noticeably numerous.  The shirts with KC standing for former Liberal Bee Jay batboy Kaiser Carlile were out in full force as the NBC remembered Kaiser one year after he passed away.  Hours later Liberal’s boys of summer played hard and had fun and Kaiser liked to say.  The Bee Jays beat the Fort Worth Whitetails 11-2 in seven innings.  Liberal advances to the play in round on Thursday night.

In a must win game for the Bee Jays, starting pitcher Reid Petty admitted he was nervous.  But he showed no signs of that going all seven innings in Liberal’s first complete game of the year from a starting pitcher.  He struck out five and walked one.

The Bee Jays scored three in the third.  Marc Mumper lined a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded and no outs.  Kyle Knauth then singled home a run.  Cale O’Donnell lifted a sac fly to shallow right which Luke Reinschmidt was able to snake his way around the catcher’s tag at home.  The Whitetails, the Great Southwest Collegiate League champs, scored in the fourth to make it 3-1.  But Liberal broke through with four in the fifth.  Mumper singled and scored when the next batter Knauth reached on an error by the second baseman who fired the ball into left field on an attempted double play.  O’Donnell tripled over the center fielder’s head to drive home a run.  He scored on a wild pitch.  Cody Bogart doubled to right center to drive home another run.  Liberal added on in the sixth when Reinschmidt tripled to center and scored on a Mumper ground out.  Blake Brewster tripled to right center in the seventh and scored on a double steal.  Jaron Robinson lined a double to left to score a run.  Kendall Radcliff singled home a run.

Liberal is 24-22 and wins their pool to advance to Thursday night.  Liberal plays the Cape Girardeau, Missouri Capahas.  The winner advances to pool play in the NBC’s Championship Week on Saturday.  The loser finishes their season.  The game is most likely at 7 Thursday night and airs on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
