Kansas Prepares for Election Day

Brock Kappelmann - August 2, 2016 6:03 am

ST. MARYS, Kan. (AP) – Republican voters in western and central Kansas are deciding whether U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp’s willingness to buck party leaders reflects a much-needed streak of independence or a character flaw that prevents him from being effective. His contentious race against Roger Marshall, a Great Bend obstetrician, in the 1st District was the state’s marquee congressional primary – and perhaps the state’s most notable partisan contest of the year.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Moderate Republicans in Kansas are making the Kansas primary a referendum on the state’s budget problems and education funding as they try to oust conservative incumbents. More than two dozen GOP legislators faced primary opponents, and most were allies of Republican Gov. Sam Brownback who continued to support his experiment in cutting state income taxes to stimulate the economy.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Secretary of State Kris Kobach says Kansas set an “all-time record” for registered voters ahead of Tuesday’s primary, but figures posted on his own website show otherwise. His statement Monday was true for primary elections. Yet figures posted on Kobach’s website show the state had more registered voters in October 2012, ahead of that year’s general election.
