Mawhinney/O’Brien Collect Week 1 Jayhawk West Awards

KSCB News - February 11, 2015 6:32 am

A pair of Seward County Lady Saint freshmen wasted no time in getting their feet wet at the collegiate level this week as Lady Saints Jaidyn Mawhinney and Alexa O’Brien were named the Jayhawk West Player and Pitcher of the Week for week one of the 2015 softball season.

Mawhinney made the most of her collegiate debut this weekend, hitting .533 to lead the way for Seward County in the Cowtown Classic. She opened the season with a 3 hit game against Ranger in a 14-0 Seward run rule win. In the victory she scored 4 times and drove home another run for the Lady Saints. On Saturday she was back at it again, putting together back to back multi-hit games, finishing the day 5 for 8 with 3 runs scored.

O’Brien fared quite well for the Lady Saints this weekend, throwing in the first two games of her collegiate career. Friday against #20 Seminole State the freshman went 6 innings, allowing just 1 earned run while striking out 5 Lady Trojan hitters. She backed it up with another quality start on Saturday, going the distance against Hill, striking out 6 in a 4-3 Seward win.

The Lady Saints hit the diamond and the road once again on Wednesday when they travel back to Texas to take on the Clarendon Lady Bulldogs in Clarendon.
