SWH Coach Appreciates Attitude of Mustangs

KSCB News - August 22, 2014 1:09 pm

It is infectious. Southwestern Heights football that is. The program has fallen on hard times going 1-8, 2-7, 1-8, and 3-6 the past four seasons. But fifth year head coach Matt Scripsick says that didn’t stop many of his players from showing up early to early morning workouts this summer. And it sure didn’t stop the coach from diving on a loose ball under an evergreen on a 102 degree day in August just to make his point. It’s tough not get lost in the enthusiasm at a Mustang practice. Scripsick says he appreciates his teams’ effort and says they just need more confidence.

The Mustangs have 37 out for football at the 3A school. There are nine starters back on both sides of the ball. There are 10 seniors and 14 juniors to lead the way this season. The Mustangs were 3-6 last year basically winning the games they should win in convincing fashion and dropping games in blowout fashion against teams with superior talent. Key Mustangs this season include Sr. TE/ILB Richard Navarrette, Sr. WR/.S Brandon Kisner, Jr. RB/OLB Efrain Chavez, Jr. QB Jorge Dela Torre, and Sr. RT/DE Cody Jennings who hasn’t been cleared to play due to a medical procedure.

The Mustangs were featured during the Sportsguys Friday morning.
