Gustafson Gets Teams Attention for Game Two

KSCB News - March 30, 2012 5:03 pm

Maybe it took a good old fashioned tongue lashing to get the Seward County Lady Saint softball team going. After a 1-0 loss in eight innings in game one, 10th year head coach Andrea Gustafson took her team into left field and gave them a speech which would have made Frank Martin blush. The Lady Saints responded with an 8-4 win in game two.

In game one, Trinidad State won the game in eight innings. Seward couldn’t score despite a quirky softball rule in extra innings which places a runner on second base to begin the inning. But Seward only had four hits and wasted another strong outing by Jill Dickson (14-7) who allowed just five hits in the loss.

In game two, the Lady Saints struck for a four spot in the bottom of the sixth to break open what was a 4-3 Seward lead. Stephanie Mark carried the Saints offense going 3-4 with four RBI’s. She also wacked her 23rd double of the season. She is just one shy of the school record set by Jena Rue in 2007 when she had 24 two baggers. Bri Diaz was 4-4 while Taylor McDougall, Erin Scott, and Ashley Kirkes added two hits a piece.

Seward is 29-15 overall while the Trinidad State Lady Trojans are 14-10 after the split.

First place Seward plays at second place Butler Wednesday.
