Liberal More Competitive in Garden City

KSCB News - September 26, 2011 6:35 am

The Lady Redskin Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team competed in the Garden City Invitational on Saturday, September 24 th . Competing teams included Hays, Dodge City, Scott City, Ulysses, Great Bend, Garden City, Meade, Cimarron, Pratt, Colby, and two teams from Garden City.

Even though Liberal did not place as a team, our matches were much more competitive than previous tournaments.

Individual Results:

#1 Singles—Kathy Nguyen went 3-2 on the day finishing 7 th Place. She first battled with the tournament number-one seed from Great Bend, Morgan Francis. With the game count tied at 4-4, Francis proved to be more consistent pulling away 8-4. Kathy then defeated Alison Davidson from Ulysses 8-1, she lost a very close match to Colby’s Paige Roopchan 5-8, then dominated Dodge City’s Cadence Keeton 8-4 to take 7 th place.

#2 Singles—Vickie Calderon participated in her first varsity match and competed hard but came up short 0-4 on the day. This was great experience for Vickie, as she will compete in our W.A.C. tournament as our #3 Singles player

#1 Doubles—Shelby Hay & Maddie Rees displayed spurts of excellence but fell short going 1-3 on the day losing matches they should have won. This was, however, their first match together as a doubles team.

#2 Doubles—Melissa Alvarado & Lauren Harp also showed spurts of excellence, but fell short of their goal finishing 2-3 on the day finishing 8 th place. They defeated Colby’s Lamm/Schindler 8-6, lost to Hays’ Gagnon/Bird 3-8, defeated Ulysses’ Pfingsten/Rodriquez 8-2, then lost to ScottCity’s Rice/Beeson 4-8. They finished the day battling Great Bend’s Brining/Maneth losing in a tie breaker 8-7 (4).

The Lady Redskins travel to McPherson on Saturday in preparations for our W.A.C. tournament the following week.
