A Sigh of Relief for Saints

There was a sigh of relief in the Green House Wednesday night.  After three straight losses and back to back one point losses, the Seward County Saints topped the Independence Pirates 80-72 in the Green House.

Independence took a lead of 15-9 and 22-16 in the first half.  The Pirates controlled most of the first half.  But when Brook Powers sunk a shot from near half court to beat the halftime buzzer, the Saints took a 41-40 lead at the half.  The Pirates took a 55-48 lead with 12:23 remaining.  The Saints reclaimed the lead at 61-60 with 8:30 remaining.  SCCC led 70-67 and 72-69 with 3:27 remaining.  SCCC led 74-69 with 2:38 remaining.  An RJ McKinnie lay up gave the Saints a 76-69 lead with 1:48 remaining.  Seward’s eight point advantage to end the game was their biggest lead.

The Black Hills Energy Player of the Game is Lucas N’Gombo with 23 points on 10-10 shooting.  JJ Chapman added 16 points and five rebounds.  Brevyn Coleman scored a season high 11.  Lyna Brooks Jr. scored 11.  Brooks Powers had nine points with five rebounds and five assists.

Seward shot 55 percent making 5-16 from three and 13-19 from the foul line.  Indy shot 44 percent from the field and 8-18 from three and 16-28 from the foul line.  SCCC led points in the paint 52-28.  The Saints had 22 assists.

Independence drops their third straight and falls to 14-12 overall and 12-8 in the KJCCC.  Seward improves to 17-10 overall and 12-9 in the Jayhawk.  The Saints have the bye Saturday and play at Barton Wednesday at 7:30 on 1270 and 92.3.
