Wichita Resident Claims $1 Million Powerball Prize Sold in Southwest Kansas

Joe Denoyer - September 12, 2016 11:17 am

A Wichita resident has claimed the $1 million Powerball prize from the August 24 drawing!  The lucky winner, who wished to remain anonymous, matched the first five Powerball numbers, but not the Powerball to win the large cash prize!

“I didn’t even realize I was holding the winning ticket until yesterday morning,” said the winner.  “I stopped for coffee at a gas station and while I was there I decided to check my ticket.  When I scanned it, the self-checker said I had to claim my prize at the Lottery.  When I saw that message, I figured I had won $1,000.  I never thought it would be $1 million!”

Since the winner wasn’t sure how much he had won, he looked up his winning numbers on the Kansas Lottery’s website, kslottery.com.

“I was blown away,” said the winner.  “I usually don’t buy Powerball tickets until the jackpot reaches $200 million.  For some reason on Wednesday, I decided to go ahead and get a ticket even though the jackpot was $127 million.  I’m very glad I made the purchase.”

The Wichita winner won the $1 million Powerball cash prize on a $2 Quick Pick ticket. The winning ticket was purchased at Kwik Shop 701, located at 1102 Campus Dr. in Garden City.  For selling the $1 million winning ticket, the store is eligible to receive a $1,000 selling bonus.
