TRiO Offers Opportunity at SCCC/ATS

KSCB News - October 5, 2010 12:00 am

The numbers are up for a student support program at SCCC/ATS.

Academic career counseler Robert Herbig says the numbers don’t

lie.

“TRiO is a federally funded program,” Herbig said. “It’s designed to help

students who are academically at a disadvantage like first generation college

students, low income students, students with documented disabilities and

things like that. We really provide a lot of services to our students and it

looks to me like we are getting more students using our services than last

year.”

Herbig was a guest on Talkradio 1270’s Live From Broadcast Square last month.

SCCC/ATS’s web site indicates there are 160 students involved in the TRiO program.

TRiO is the umbrella for Student Support Services (SSS) that is offered nationwide

at two and four year colleges. The program is supported through a competitive

grant process that is submitted to the United States Department of Education.

Who is eligible for SSS?

Students who meet at least one of these requirements:

First-generation college students

Meet required federal income levels

Have a physical or learning disability

Are planning on transfering after SCCC/ATS.
