Think Pink ??Builds Toward A Cure??

KSCB News - October 25, 2011 4:49 pm

Southwest Medical Center ’s Think Pink Challenge just completed its sixth year with the theme “Building Toward A Cure”.

“We decided to have the theme this year correlate with what is currently going on at Southwest Medical Center ,” explained Southwest Medical Center Public Relations Director and Think Pink Committee Member Nancy Kletecka. “It went really well and once again, the entrants did not disappoint us – they amazed us with their creativity.”

Those taking home honors from the event were in the business division: first place, Golden Plains Credit Union; second place, KSCB; and third place, Basic Energy Services. In the medical offices, first place went to The Doctor’s Office LLC, Dr. Brandi Boller and staff; second place, Dr. Mariana Lucero’s office; and third place, Women’s Specialists of Liberal, Dr. Lamberto Flores and staff. Winners in the Southwest Medical Center departmental division were: first place, Radiology; second place, the Medical/Surgery Floor and third place, Administration/Accounting.

“The judges had a very tough time this year and they had to break several ties,” Kletecka said. “They were very appreciative of those who participated in this contest.”

This year’s entries were judged by cancer survivors Barbara Shelton, Twylah Simmons and Lisa Nelson.

“I appreciate all the work and creativity that was put into each and every entry,” said Shelton . “They were all wonderful and it was hard to choose (the top three). ”

Shelton said the Think Pink event helps bring a lot of awareness to the community regarding the disease and what those who have been diagnosed go through.

Nelson, who is also the local area American Cancer Society Income Development Manager, echoed Shelton ’s sentiments.

“If we could have picked them all – we would have,” Nelson said.

“I really appreciated the time, energy and passion that obviously went in to each of the entries,” Simmons added.

All three judges were impressed by the research regarding breast cancer information that many put into their entries. Having breast cancer information as part of your entry was one of the three criteria that each were judged on along with creativity and “use of pink” relative to the space. Each of the three judges had 10 points they could award the entrants for each of the three criteria for a total of 30 points from each judge and a grand total of 90 points possible.

“All three of these areas must be utilized. Since we started this program, there have been some who just missed taking home first place because one of the areas was not included or not touched upon very much in their decorating plans,” Kletecka said.

Other businesses who participated included: Emeritus at Liberal Springs, Epic Touch PCS, Liberal Good Samaritan, and JC Penney’s. Other medical clinics who also participated included: Seward County Health Department & WIC and Gill Internal Medicine. Departments at Southwest Medical Center who also participated were: Admissions, OR/PACU/Ambulatory, OB , Food & Nutrition, Plant Operations, Patient Accounts, Utilization Management and Discharge Planning and Housekeeping. Two other departments did not enter the contest but they did decorate: the SWMC Laboratory and Pharmacy. A new category that was a last minute division was schools. Only one school entered that and took home first place – Seward County Community College Nursing Students/Student Nursing Association.

Kletecka and Southwest Medical Center Radiology Director Kelly Denton are proud of those who took part in the annual Think Pink event October 16-22.

“All of those who entered are winners because they are stepping up and making a difference with breast cancer education and awareness for the community – that is really what matters,” Kletecka said. “It’s not whether or not you get awarded a first place – it’s being a part of something that is very important.”

“We thank all those who participated and helped bring awareness and educat ion to the community of Liberal,” Denton added. “ We hope to see you again next year and have even more who participate . The real winners are those who learned something from seeing the pink and reading the information displayed. If we can save one life – it is all worth it.”
