SWMC Announces Pediatric Cardiology Services

Southwest Medical Center is pleased to announce Dr. Tuan Nguyen, pediatric cardiologist, will begin seeing patients monthly for specialty care and services starting on March 27 in Liberal.

Dr. Tuan Nguyen currently practices at Kidz Cardiology clinic in Wichita, which has several outreach locations in Kansas. Dr. Nguyen is a native Kansan and graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Prior to his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Miami Children’s Hospital, Dr. Nguyen worked as a pediatric hospitalist for the University of Kansas School of Medicine and Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.

Nguyen said he became interested in medicine after the birth of his first child, when he realized the rewards of caring for another life. After becoming a pediatrician, Nguyen says he was drawn into the pediatric cardiology specialty.

“I found the field of pediatric cardiology amazingly interesting,” Nguyen explained. “There are so many interesting diseases, from congenital heart malformations to abnormalities within the electrical system of an otherwise normal heart. When I was a general pediatrician I realized that not only did I enjoy caring for kids with heart disease, there was also a big need for access to cardiac specialty care in Kansas. With that in mind I pushed myself to go back into training so I could come back and provide that care.”

Dr. Nguyen evaluates cardiac conditions, such as heart murmurs, chest pain, palpitations, syncope (fainting) and performs medication and sports clearances. While Nguyen treats patients newborn through 21 years of age, he is also able to assess the heart prenatally for any pregnant mothers with abnormal sonograms.

Dr. Nguyen says he hopes to provide convenient, local care for children and their families through the outreach clinic at Southwest Medical Center.

“When I see a patient I do my best to keep the family updated throughout the entire visit,” Nguyen added. “I review and report results of testing right there at the time of the visit. I want my families to feel comfortable asking questions and that they are getting clear answers and understand the findings before they go home.”

Dr. Nguyen will begin seeing patients on March 27 in Suite 103 on the first floor of the Medical Office Building at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal. Patient appointments can be scheduled with Dr. Nguyen by calling (316) 670-3800. Most major medical insurances and new patients are accepted.
