Seward Finishes Regular Season on 7 Game Streak

GOODLAND, Kan. – Seward County Community College sweeps Northwest Kansas Technical College on Saturday for their final games of the season with a 7-5 victory followed by a 10-1 win. The Saints end the regular season with a seven game win streak, a 16-10 conference record, and a 17-15 overall record.

In the first game of the day, the Saints trailed 2-0 after the Mavericks scored two in the first inning. Seward County went scoreless for the first three innings but got their offense established in the fourth inning. Melissa Crisanti reached on an error and AJ Luna scored in the process to give Seward their first run of the game. The Saints tied the game at two-all with Macy Cesa-Spearman able to reach off of an error on the infield and Emily Mojica scored from third base. Seward took their first lead of the game with a single by Jaci Oakley that scored Crisanti and Cesa-Spearman to give the Saints a 4-2 lead. Ayanna Clemons followed up with a base hit that scored Jacie Scott and JAci Oakley to give Seward a 6-2 advantage.

Northwest Kansas responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead down to 6-5. Ashley Low connected for an RBI single that scored Oakley and gave Seward a 7-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Neither team scored in the seventh inning and the Saints extended their winning streak to six with the win.

Alyssah Pontoja was the winning pitcher for the Saints, allowed ten hits and five runs over seven innings, and striking out three.

In the final game of the day, the Saints scored in the first with a double by Jaci Oakley that scored Cesa-Spearman from third base. The Mavericks responded with a single run in the first to tie the game at 1-1. Alondra Galindo reached off of an error that allowed Ayannah Clemons, AJ Luna, and Emily Mojica to score. Macy Cesa-Spearman followed up and grounded out to first but it allowed Galindo to score from third to give Seward a 5-1 lead.

Ashley Low connected on a single to left field that scored Jaci Oakley in the top of the third inning to give Seward a 6-1 advantage. In the next inning AJ Luna started off with a solo home run and Cesa-Spearman followed suit a better later to give the Saints an 8-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, the Saints scored two more off of a single by Ashley low that scored Alondra Galindo and Cesa-Spearman.

The Saints closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth with a double play and a fly ball out to win 10-1. Seward closed out the regular season with a sweep over the Mavericks on the road for their seventh win in a row.

Ireland Caro earned the victory from the circle for Seward County, allowed three hits and one run over five innings, and striking out two.

Seward County will be in action on Friday, May 7th in Dodge City, Kansas for the Region VI tournament. The opponent will be announced next week with the complete brackets and seeds.
