Seward County Commission Censures Commissioner Wettstein

The Seward County Commission met Monday night for their regularly scheduled meeting a t 5:30pm at the Seward County Administration Building. After County Commissioners were introduced to new County Employees, Dave Miller of the Gas Compressor Institute was asked to come forward and explain his complaint in front of the commission. Miller had previously sent the Commission a letter outlining his complaint. The complaint was on behalf of the GCI, and surrounded the actions of Commissioner CJ Wettstein. In the letter, Miller stated that Commissioner Wettstein, had over the last couple of years had tried to get a booth during the GCI for free, to promote his hunting business and had been denied. Miller stated that this year, after once again being denied a booth, Commissioner Wettstein, proceeded to pass out literature promoting his business, after being invited to attend the Institute as a Commissioner. Other actions by Wettstein came into question and were discussed. Incidents discussed included a motel stay on the County’s credit card, and a survey Wettstein handed out to County Department heads. The Seward County commission voted to censure Commissioner Wettstien, and to forward the complaints and information to the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, for his opinion, and the possibility of further disciplinary action. The Commission also recommended that they set more rigorous travel policy and the use of credit cards, with the possibility of surrendering those cards and checking them out on an as needed basis.

Also at the meeting the Employee Committee Scholarsips were awrded to Hailey Wyer and Alan Keen. The Commission also approved the waiver of Event Center fees for Liberal High School for AP testing, recommended Hope Alvarez and Jennifer Ebersole to the Southwest Guidance Center Board, approved the waiver of the hiring freeze for the Appraisers Office, and also approved the use of the Event Center for the Southwest Kansas Association of Counties meeting. The County Commissioners also approved for the Sheriff’s Office to apply for the Edward J. Byrne Grant, bike racks for County facilities, ste the Canvas for the May 10th advisory election for 9:00am on May 13th, set the work session for the vicious dog resolution for May 18th at 5:30pm and also set the Event Center Price list.

The next regular meeting of the Seward County Commission is set for May, 16th.
