Seward County Caucus Sees Large Turnout

KSCB News - March 12, 2012 8:18 am

Kansans overwhelmingly chose Rick Santorum during Saturday’s GOP Caucus. Santorum received

52% of the vote state wide. Romney was a distant second with 21%. The victory was large enough to

secure 33 of of the state’s 40 delegates for Santorum. Romney will get the other seven.

Seward County also went with Santorum, as he received 59% of the county’s vote, which was seven percentage points

higher than the state average. Romney was second in Seward with just over 16%.

Seward County also topped all counties in Southwest Kansas in voter turnout. Seward had 382 voters cast a ballot compared to

Finney County (Garden City) who had 272 voters, Barton (Great Bend) who had 270 voters, Ellis (Hays) who had 265 voters, and

Ford (Dodge City) who had 198 voters. Seward ranked #17 out of 98 counties in attendance who held caucuses in the state.

Seward County GOP Chairman Reid Petty was overall pleased with how things went.

"We had a few hiccups along the way with some long lines, but overall I think the caucus was a success. We had so many great volunteers

that gave up their Saturday to make it possible for our county to have a say in who the nominee will be. I am especially excited to see that we beat out Dodge and Garden in voter turnout," Petty said.

Petty had the chance to meet Santorum and a few members of his family on Friday in Wichita.

Seward County Unofficial Results:

Santorum 224 (59%)

Romney 63 (16%)

Gingrich 38 (10%)

Paul 22 (6%)
