SCCC Club to Host Fifth Annual “Tis the Season for Reading”

Joe Denoyer - November 23, 2016 11:14 am

Saints Promoting Education Careers (SPEC) will host an evening of holiday stories, games and snacks for local children ages Kindergarten-third grade on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016. Each child attending will also receive a free book to take home. The event is from 5:45-6:45 p.m. and will take place in Room SW229C (upstairs in the Student Activities Building) on the main campus of Seward County Community College.

Members of SPEC are education majors, and “Tis the Season” gives them a chance to interact with elementary-age children in a fun environment as well as plan an educational activity, according to Janice Northerns, club advisor.

“It’s also a way for them to serve the community,” she said; “It’s important for club members to recognize that volunteer service will be a component of their adult lives.”

This is the second year that SPEC will give each child a free book.

“We used club funds to purchase these books, and our club members are excited to share them with the children who attend,” Northerns said.

The event is free but limited to the first 50 children to sign up. Parents should make reservations by calling club advisor Janice Northerns at 620-417-1456. Callers should leave a voice message stating name and grade level of each child attending and a phone number.  Reservations must be made by Dec. 1. For more information, call Northerns or email [email protected].
