Saints Settle for Split with Colby

Joe Denoyer - March 16, 2018 7:21 am

After an offensive outburst in game one, the Saint bats were reduced to little more than a whimper in game two.  Seward won the first game 15-8 but Colby’s Trojans took game two 12-1.

In game one, the Saints banged out 15 runs on 17 hits in just six innings.  Seward scored two in the first to lead 2-1 when Brendan Madsen lofted a solo homer to left and Dylan Paul doubled home Spencer Sackett.  Colby plated two in the second to lead 3-2.  Seward put up a three spot in the second.  Madsen singled home Benny Ayala and Paul doubled home two with two outs with a drive off the center field wall.  Cole Bergdall homered in the third for a 6-3 Saint lead.  The Trojans scored two in the fourth to make it 6-5.  Paul singled home a run in the fourth for a 7-5 lead.  The Trojans tied the game with two in the fifth.  The Saints responded with five in the fifth.  Jose Caraballo doubled to lead off the inning.  Ayala added a double.  Cruz Shope doubled home two.  Spencer Sackett added a two RBI single.  The Saints added three more in the sixth as Ayala blasted a two run homer.  Shope doubled and Maden lofted a sac fly to score the 15th run.  Tanner King gained the win to improve to 3-2.  He endured five innings allowing six earned runs with the wind howling out over 30 miles per hour.  Hunter Ratcliffe pitched two scoreless innings.

The Saints struggled to make contact in game two.  Seward struck out 12 times and only had one run on six hits.  Dylan Paul was 3-3 and drove home the one run.  Colby scored one in the first, one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and six in the seventh.  The Saints struggled defensively with five errors and missed a couple of other base hits in the wind and sun.

Seward is 15-10 and 3-3 in the Jayhawk West while Colby is tied for first at 13-9 and 7-3 in the KJCCC West.  They are tied with Butler.  Seward plays at Colby Saturday at 1.  Saints Dugout Show begins at 12:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.  The broadcast will be on 1270 until 4:30 when KU’s pregame show begins.  All of the action airs on kscbnews.net.
