Redskin Harriers Run in Hesston

The Liberal Redskin cross country teams competed in the Swather Special in Hesston, Kansas on
Thursday. 57 schools from the state competed in the meet. The Swather Special is known for its unique
scoring and divisions where there is no varsity or junior varsity, but instead each grade level only
competes against their grade, and then your top 5 places make up the team score. All 8 races ran a 5
kilometer course.
The freshman girls were led by Reece Hay who completed the race in 24:18 to place 11 th in her
division. Other freshman girls were Aileen Moreno 22 nd , Bryanna Banuelos 36 th , Esmeralda Gutierrez
42 nd , and Brianna Dominguez 51 st .
The sophomore girls had two girls medal in Katie Horyna and Audrey Gilmore. Horyna got her
second gold medal of the year as she crossed the line in 20:37. Gilmore’s time of 24:15 was good
enough for an 11 th place finish. Other sophomore girls were Erika Valverde 22 nd , Jakeline Flores 37 th ,
Alexa Puerto 43 rd , Ivette Sanchez 46 th , Alondra Bolivar 47 th , Joann Rivera 51 st , and Yoselin Tarin 54 th .
The junior girls were Gisselle Melendez and Kimberly Alacron. Melendez finished in 21 st place
with a time of 24:35, while Alacron’s time of 24:38 was 22 nd place.
The senior girls were led by Kelsey Ramsey who finished in 7 th place with a time of 22:28. Ali
Lucero clocked a time of 22:50 which was 9 th place, and Alondra Alvarado rounded out the girls on the
podium receiving 16 th place in a time of 23:36. Other senior girls included Reyn Slatten 23 rd , Tania
Minjarez 30 th , Emily Borjas 46 th , and Jennifer Mosso Ocampo 48 th .
Bishop Carroll won the girls meet with a score of 17 points, Great Bend was second with 22,
Garden City was third with 24, Liberal was 4 th with 39, and Goddard Eisenhower was 5 th with 40.
The freshman boys were led by Alex Lopez who placed 6 th in a time of 19:12. Other freshman
runners were Aaron Barbosa 22 nd , Jack Maxwell 23 rd , Jacob Sautter 26 th , Izek Olivas 40 th , Xavier Padilla
55 th , and Oscar Palacios 61 st .
The lone sophomore was Cesar Dominguez who finished in 61 st place.
The juniors were led by Javier Carrillo who was the 4 th runner with a time of 17:43. Xavier Perez
ran the course in 18:03 which placed him 7 th , and Antonio Borunda was 8 th with his time of 18:26. Joel
Obando cracked the top ten in 18:36. Fausto Parral rounded out the Redskins on the podium in 13 th
place with a time of 18:44. Other junior runners were Josh Diazdeleon in 21 st , Cory Nguyen 30 th , Merrick
Dodge 37 th , Malik Gavidia 72 nd .
The seniors had Juan Olvera and Aaron Venegas. Olvera’s time of 22:12 placed 34 th , while
Venegas placed 43 rd in 23:39.
The Redskin boys has a team score of 69 points, which placed them third in the meet. Great
Bend won with 47 points, Garden City was 2 nd with 58, Dodge City was 4 th with 73 points and with 87
points in 5 th place was Bishop Carroll.
The Redskins will compete next in Hugoton on Saturday, September 16 th at the Hugoton Golf
Course. ​
