Open Season for LHS Girls

KSCB News - August 24, 2012 6:31 am

The Liberal Redskin Girls’ Tennis season began Thursday with a home Varsity dual with Ashland and a 10-team JV tournament in Dodge City. Gusty winds played havoc with the tennis ball, and first-time players struggled to judge its bounce. Ashland edged out Liberal by one point in the dual, and the JV team failed to place as a team. But, valuable lessons were learned, and our girls competed hard.

Varsity results:

#1 Singles—Lauren Harp went 3-2 on the day finishing 3rd Place.

#2 Singles—Maddie Rees went 4-1 on the day finishing in 2nd Place.

Singles player Samantha Rodriquez went 0-5

Singles player Ana Garcia went 1-4

#1 Doubles—JayCee Darroch/Stephanie Sanchez went 4-1 finishing in 2nd Place

#2 Doubles__Vickie Calderon/Marissa Rodriquez went 2-3

The Doubles team of Alicia Collins/Kylie Evans went 0-5

The Doubles team of Rosy Chavez/Karina Moreno went 1-4

JV Results:

#1 Singles—Jordyn Apsley went 2-3 on the day. She impressed me with her aggressive play at the net and her toughness as she turned an ankle in her first match of the day.

#2 Singles—Paige Young went 1-4 on the day and improved her spin serve.

#1 Doubles—Shelby Savely/Tashawna Bolen went 0-5. They struggled with the wind but competed in close matches to the end.

#2 Doubles—Katie Wehling/Kathy Hernandez went 2-3. For their first doubles match ever, they made great decisions and executed sharp-angle shots that they can build upon.

Our JV team travels to Cimarron on Tuesday and Scott City on Thursday.
