New LHS Head Football Coach Discusses Upcoming Season

KSCB News - July 15, 2009 12:00 am

New Liberal High School Head Football Coach Wade Standley was a guest on the ‘Sportsguys’ Wednesday morning.

Standley said the team is working out everyday this summer beginning at 6:30 in the mornings. Standley said they are working on strength and conditioning. They are also working on speed and explosive drills. He said the goal is for his players to get bigger, faster, and stronger.

One of the main goals Standley has for the team is to “live like a champion.”

Standley said living like a champion off the field will transcend to playing like a champion on the field. He said the goal is to get better everyday, but that they want to compete for championships. Standley said he is aware that will not happen overnight, but that they have to keep working toward it.

Standley has had experience in coaching on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. He most recently was the defensive coordinator at Tulsa Union High School.

Standley plans to focus more on the defense leaving a lot of the offense to his offensive coordinator. However, while his focus may be on improving the defensive side of the ball, he said he still plans to spend time with the offense as head coach.

Standley coached against former Seward County Lady Saints Head Coach Jim Littell’s son last season in a football game as Littell’s son started his first high school varsity football game for Stillwater High School against Tulsa Union. Standley said he was impressed by Littell’s play and that he thought he would come out much more rattled then he appeared in the game.

Standley’s first official practice with the Redskins will take place on August. 17. His debut as head coach for the ‘Angry Red’ will be on Friday, September 4, as the Skins’ will play at Newton.
