Liberal Spreads the Love

KSCB News - August 28, 2009 12:00 am

It wasn’t the typical Soap and Towel Scrimmage. It was on the practice field with the fresh new turf on Redskin near completion. It was the first LHS public scrimmage for head coach Wade Standley and only two staff members (Jason Dunlap and George Brown) were employed by USD 480 two years ago. It was also a chance to see the new spread offense and stack defense. A long pass from Slader McVey to Jade Cathey set up a short McVey toss to tight end Devin Davis. A Levondrick Martin kick return resulted in long return for an apparent touchdown but Martin pulled up short holding his hamstring. Standley says he liked what he saw overall. “The Redskins won, that’s what I liked the most,” Standley said. “We saw some good things tonight. We executed at times on offense and saw some good plays and guys making plays which is always good. Defensively, we ran to the football well at times. There’s plenty for us to work on but I think it’s a building block and it will give us a gauge of specifically what we need to work on to get ready for Newton.”

Liberal opens at Newton September 4 on Talkradio 1270 and kscb.net.
