Liberal City Commission Meets, Makes Appointment To Diversity Council Board

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday night in the City Commission Chambers for their regularly scheduled meeting. Among the Items on the agenda, the Commission issued a Proclamation declaring the importance of Highway 54 to southwest Kansas, and how vital it is to 4 lane the highway for safety and economic reasons. The Commissioners appointed Gwen Moore to the Diversity Council, adopted an Economic Development Plan for the City in an agreement with New Boston Creative Group, and purchased a new ice machine for Willow Tree Golf Course in the amount of $3700.00 with the Mens Night Organization paying $1000.00 of that cost. The Commissioners also purchased 13 lots in the Coronado Heights Addition at $5000.00 per lot to be used for the final phase of the current USDA Grant for the Self-Help Housing Program. The monies will be recouped by the City when the lots are sold to the participants of the Program. During Tuesday’s meeting, Commissioners also accepted several Grants and Donations from various groups and organizations.Accepted were donations from Rocking M Radio for $2,000.00 and the Liberal Area Coalition for $2,291.73 for the continuation of Compliance/DUI Checks and the purchase of equipment and materials to combat underage drinking. Also accepted by the Commission was a donation of over$1,470.00 from the PEO Chapter FA, for the purchase of bullet/stab proof vest for Rex, the City’s K-9. The Liberal Police Department also received a year COPS Grant for $118,495.00 with a local match of $39,498.00 for an additional SRO Officer for USD 480. The School District has agreed to pay the local match. After a 15 minute Executive Session, the Commission voted to accept an offer of $20,000.00 from Liberty Plaza LLC for a parcel of land on the north edge of Liberal, subject to landscaping and performance provisions and also subject to the approval of legal counsel. The Liberal City Commission will next meet on Tuesday July 17 for Special Funding Requests from organizations.
