Liberal City Commission Approves Spending Funds For Firefighter Zachary Clifton Memorial Library

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday night fo their regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30pm in the City Commission Chambers. Among the items on the agenda, the Liberal Fire Department’s Chief Kelly Kirk came before the commission asking permission to expend funds from the Grants and Donation received by the Fire Department, to establish the Firefighter Zachary D. Clifton Memorial Library. Zac Clifton was a firefighter with the Liberal Fire Department when he was tragically killed in a car accident June 2, 2006 on the way to his wedding. Donations to the Zac Clifton Memorial Fund total $4,390.00, with $3,984.10 to be spent on Training textbooks and DVD’s for current and future fire fighters. The City Commission unanimously approved the expenditure for the Library which will be housed at Liberal’s South Fire Station. A private dedication ceremony for the department only will be on June 2, 2011, with a public open house to follow. The liberal City Commission also approved the resurfacing of the Blue Bonnet tennis courts and the construcion of 2 Championship style courts, Total cost of this project is $285,140.00 which will come from the 1 cent sales tax. In other action items the Commission approved the purchase of 2 Impac barrels for the Sanitation Department, ad appointed Barbara E. Smith to the Liberal Memorial Library Board. The next regular meeting of the Liberal City Commission is set for May 24th.
