Lawrence Free State Run Rules Liberal Softball

Brock Kappelmann - May 19, 2022 5:58 am

Liberal’s softball season ended Wednesday in Topeka with an 11-1 loss to the Lawrence Free State Firebirds at Washburn University in Topeka.  Liberal had one hit and committed four errors in the loss.  Free State scored six in the second, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to end the game.  Amya Blake scored Liberal’s run in the fourth.  Jenna Ormiston doubled for Liberal’s one hit.  Liberal finishes 10-11.

Coach Tom McClure’s Comments

“It is a tough way to end the season that way, but we drew a tough group. Lawrence Free State had bodies where we hope to be in future as a program. We know that in the offseason and summer we have to put in the work and improve and not come out next year and expect it to just happen. The girls worked as a unit, did not get down as much and responded better in the end of the season. We just faced a tough team a few years removed from a state title that has a wealth of softball resources in their backyard. We will lose 4 seniors, but will have a great core coming back next year. Our statistics improved, attitudes improved, and more importantly chemistry improved. With a chunk of the youth getting reps, we should continue to climb and be a solid squad in the next few years.”
