Lakin To Consider Fixing Uranium Problem

The town of Lakin is considering whether to accept stimulus money to help fix the high levels of uranium in its drinking water.

Lakin was recently approved for a state loan of $3.5 million — $700,000 of that money is stimulus money and would not have to be paid back.

The uranium levels have been an ongoing issue for the city, which plans to build a water treatment plant. However, the town is still in the process of creating a design for the project and doesnź??t know if they will be able to submit plans in time to receive the money.

“We would still be approved for that loan; however, if we can’t meet this July 30th deadline, we wouldn’t be eligible to get the loan forgiveness via the stimulus dollars,ź?ť said City Administrator Fred Jones.

City official say they have until May 8th to decide whether they can submit their plans before the deadline.
