Lady Saints Sign Five on Signing Day Including Former LHS Player

KSCB News - April 8, 2011 1:04 pm

Seward County Lady Saints coaches Toby Wynn and Penny
Jones have announced that five new faces will be joining the gals in
green for next season. Payton Flemming of Elkhart, La’Quecia Parker and
Charmaine Burns of Leavenworth, Kelsey Blair of Satanta, and LaTonya
Gooden of Liberal will join eight returning Lady Saints looking to
improve on this season’s 21-11 overall record.

-Payton Flemming is a 5’9 wing player from Elkhart that will have high
expectations as a freshman next season. During her senior season she
averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds per game while being named an
Honorable Mention All-State performer. Coach Penny Jones said of
Flemming "she is a tough player that can score both on the inside and
the outside. She won’t be the tallest player on the court but she is a
very good rebounder and will remind some Lady Saints fans of Rachel
Barnes."

-La’Quecia Parker is a 5’5 guard from Leavenworth that led the Sunflower
League in assists this season. She averaged 5 points and 6 assists per
game as a senior and was an All-Conference player. Coach Penny Jones
said of Parker "she sees the court very well and will compete for time
at the point guard position right away. She is quick and is a good
defender."

-Charmaine Burns is a 5’8 guard from Leavenworth and was her counties
Player of the Year this season. This season she averaged 15 points and
6 rebounds per game to go along with 5 steals per contest. Coach Penny
Jones said of Burns "she is a very athletic player that can do a lot of
different things on the court. She can shoot, she can drive, and is
quick on defense. She will remind you of a Vanessa Simmons that played
here in 08-09."

-Kelsey Blair is a 5’7 guard from Satanta that scored almost 1,200
points during her high school career. During her senior year she led
her team to an 18-4 record and averaged 14 points and 4 steals per game.
Coach Penny Jones said of Blair "she is a scorer. She can shoot the
ball very well and has good court awareness. She averaged more than 10
points per game every year of her high school career, she knows how to
put the ball in the basket."

-LaTonya Gooden is a 5’10 forward from Liberal that will join the Lady
Saints after taking a year off from basketball. Coach Penny Jones said
of Gooden "she is athletic, plays very hard, and works hard as well. It
is always nice to be able to have players from Liberal and the
surrounding communities on our team."
