Lady Red Finishes with a Roar

The Liberal Lady Redskins finished their season with a 43-37 over perennial power Maize Saturday afternoon at Landon Arena in the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. The Lady Red finishes with their first ever third place showing at state. Liberal won state in 1976 and took second in 1987.

Liberal won despite shooting only 26 percent from the field. LHS held Maize to 33 percent shooting. Liberal made 17-23 free throws, while Maize was 6-8 at the foul line.  Liberal made 4-18 three-pointers, while Maize was 4-13 from distance.

Liberal saved several possessions with 15 offensive rebounds.  LHS out rebounded Maize 30-27.  Liberal only committed 8 turnovers against a stingy Lady Eagle defense.

Machia Mullens registered her second double-double of the state tournament with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Ali Lucero buried three three-pointers and scored 9 points in her final game with the Lady Redskins.  Audrey Gilmore had 7 points, 6 rebounds.  Katie Horyna added 7 points, and Whitney Hay scored 6.

Lady Redskins overcame going scoreless for about nine minutes of the first half after an early Lucero three.  Liberal led 19-15 at the half, after outscoring Maize 16-9 in the second quarter.

Liberal finishes 23-2 with two wins at the state tournament, while Maize finishes 17-8.
