Kids Count for Federal Funding Thursday in Kansas

KSCB News - September 20, 2012 7:18 am

Today, the federal government will count your child. In Kansas today is the official count date. The number of kids attending school today count for federal funding. The Newcomer Center’s Sara Carillo says USD 480’s numbers are ever changing.

"The Newcomer Center serves as a central enrollment center. Everyone who enrolls in school after the two days of official enrollment comes through us. For the first month after enrollment from August 7 to September 5, we enrolled 384 kids out of our office. Last year from September until May we enrolled another 680."

Carillo says Liberal’s student population changes nearly every day.

"Our population here in Liberal is so fluxuating that is goes on a day by day basis. Yesterday, I enrolled four kids."

So Thursday’s count could be anybody’s guess. Today’s count will also be used to determine classification for activities other than football.
