Memorial Day Gas Prices Down

Steven Rains - August 28, 2019 11:19 am

Kansans are still taking advantage of good gas prices as we approach Labor Day.

“Nationally and in Kansas, we’re poised to be about the cheapest Labor Day gas prices since 2017,” said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. “Today’s national average is at $2.58 a gallon and a couple years ago, we were at $2.63.”

Kansas is the 11th cheapest state for gasoline in the U.S. at $2.35 a gallon.

“If we look back to a year ago in the Sunflower State, we were looking at gas prices more than 30 cents more than we’re seeing today per gallon,” said Steward. “If you are taking a road trip for the Labor Day weekend, you’ll be saving some money at the pump.”

Crude oil prices have stayed down compared to where they could be in the summer.

“Last week, they fell significantly due to trade tensions between the United States and China,” said Steward. “That’s something that we will be watching as we go on. If the two countries are going to go after each other with more tariffs, that could impact the economy and trade overall. If fewer goods are being sold and needing to be transported by highways, that could impact demand for gasoline and diesel fuels.”

Demand traditionally drops after Labor Day anyway, due to fewer vacation trips taking place in the fall.
