LHS ANNOUNCES INTERIM BOYS BASKETBALL COACH

Liberal High School announces updates to the boys basketball coaching staff.  Trace Haskell is stepping into the role of interim head coach following nine seasons as an assistant for the Redskins.  Coach Haskell has accepted this position after it opened late this summer and will serve as a steady hand to guide the program through an uncertain 2020-2021 season.

“We are extremely excited to announce that Coach Haskell will lead our boys this winter,” LHS Head Principal Ashley Kappelmann stated.  “Coach Haskell is familiar with the players, program, and expectations here at Liberal High School.  We know he is committed to giving our young men the best experience possible while preparing them to be successful on and off the court.”

Coach Haskell has a wealth of coaching experience, having also coached football and track for many years in Liberal as well as other communities in the state of Kansas.  As a graduate from Liberal High School, his connection to his alma mater and its current players was a major factor in Coach’s decision to lead the team this year.

“My number one priority is to provide our student-athletes with a great experience. This means working extremely hard to be successful on the court but also focusing on the opportunity to assist our young men in growing as people and students.  We’ve got a dedicated staff and a great group of guys, so I’m really looking forward to the season,” Haskell said.

Also joining the staff as freshman head coach is Richard Forbes.  Coach Forbes is in his second year teaching math at LHS and has a strong history with the game of basketball.  He played junior college at Howard College in Texas before graduating from Binghamton University in his home state of New York.  After graduating, Coach Forbes spent time coaching his AAU program in New York before moving to Liberal last year to work with SCCC Men’s Basketball Coach Jason Sautter.

Liberal has one opening for an assistant boys basketball coach.  Those interested can contact [email protected] or apply online at usd480.net.
