Evans and Mickens Win Athlete of the Year

Liberal High School hosted their athletic assembly Monday night.  It was a night when there were no athletic activities on the schedule so the night was perfect for a night of recognition. KSCB/KLDG’s Joe Denoyer was the emcee.   Here are the winners.

*TRIPLE THREAT AWARDS*

Athletes participated in 3 different sports throughout the entire school
year.

*RAYMOND BOLES MEMORIAL AWARD*

*THIS YEAR’S RECIPIENT OF THE RAYMOND BOLES AWARD IS: Zach Mansell*

The Raymond Boles Memorial Award is presented annually to an outstanding
Liberal High Athlete. Raymond Boles was an outstanding farmer and stockman
and was chosen in 1965 as the master farmer by the state extension service
and the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce.

He played football on Coach Shupe’s team that had an undefeated record at
Liberal High. He attended Kemper Military Academy and Kansas State College
at Manhattan.

Raymond was a community Leader and active in his church and other civic
affairs. He devoted much of his personal time and energy to the completion
of Redskin Field and spent many man hours in the Planning of the Liberal
Area Vocational Technical School. He was unselfish with his time and
talent and frequently was there to do the manual labor necessary to get the
job done. Raymond, his wife, Vernetta, and their daughter were killed in
an automobile accident on their way to a football game in Garden City.

*GLENN & JOAN COOPER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP*

*THIS YEAR’S RECIPIENT IS*: *Reyna Gonzalez*

This $250 scholarship is voted by the Booster Club and shall be given each
year to a senior who competes in one or more sports and exhibits good
sportsmanship and leadership.

*KSCB SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: *

*DAILY LEADER REDSKIN/ LADY REDSKIN OF THE YEAR AWARD*

*This year’s Leader & Times male scholarship award winner is: Cole Evans &
Cade Hinkle*

*This year’s Leader & Times female scholarship award winner is: Reyna
Gonzalez & Jada Mickens*

The Leader & Times presents a Redskin and Lady Redskin of the Year award to
athletes who make a significant contribution in a number of sports. This
year’s male and female athletes have participated in at least 2 sports and
had a major impact in all that they participated in.

*REDSKIN FAN OF THE YEAR*

*This year’s REDSKIN FAN OF THE YEAR is: The Xavier Perez Family*

The Redskin Fan of the Year is selected by the coaches. This award is
given to those who go above and beyond the call of duty in supporting
Liberal High School athletics.

*LIBERAL REDSKIN BOOSTER CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR*

*The 2016-2017 Booster Club Member of the Year is: Bruce McPhail*

*MALE & FEMALE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD*

This award is voted on by all coaches. Sportsmanship is defined as conduct
becoming to one participating in a sport such as fairness, respect for
one’s opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing.

* The Female Sportsmanship Award winner for the 2016-2017 school
year is: Emily Roberts*

* The Male Sportsmanship Award winner for the 2016-2017 school year
is: Kylan Thomas*

*MALE & FEMALE ACTIVITIES ACADEMIC AWARD*

This award is voted on by all coaches. It shall be a boy and girl with a
grade point average in the upper 25% of their class and must have
participated in more than one sport or activity.

*The 2016-2017 winner of the Female Activities Academic Award is: Rachel
Jones*

*The 2016-2017 winner of the Male Activities Academic Award is: Cade
Hinkle*

*JUNIOR FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR*

This award is voted on by all coaches. This award goes to the outstanding
Junior Female Athlete who has participated in at least two sports.

*The best all around Junior Female Athlete this year is: Ali Lucero*

*JUNIOR MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR*

This award is voted on by all coaches. This Award is given to the
outstanding Junior male who demonstrates the highest degree of over-all
achievement in at least two sports.

*The best all around Junior male athlete this year is: Cameron Riley*

*MALE & FEMALE REDSKIN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR*

This award is voted on by all the coaches. An athlete must have competed in
two or more sports per year. These athletes represent the best of Liberal
High School has to offer in the graduating Senior Class.
