Cottonwood and Sunflower All Set for Flip Off

KSCB News - February 11, 2010 12:00 am

Cottonwood and Sunflower Intermediate Schools will have their third annual flip off competition on Friday at their respective schools.

Cottonwood 5th grade teachers Eydie Petty who has appeared on Nickelodeon in Florida and the BBC in Las Vegas for her success in the Pancake flipping competition every year and Daniel Fick who has also had success in the main competition came up with the idea for Cottonwood to have a competition eight years ago. Two years ago after Cottonwood had done their own thing they challenged Sunflower to join in for a flip off. Sunflower accepted the challenge and won the first annual challenge. Cottonwood got their revenge last year with both schools vying to take over bragging rights for the next year on Friday.

Every grade selects a student to flip for them. Then every teacher of a class flips too. The top three student flippers times are then recorded and go toward the competition that decides what school wins. When both schools finish Cottonwood Principal Donna Sill and Sunflower Principal Sheri King will simulcast a phone call with their results to determine the champion. There is a traveling trophy that has a pancake on it.

This year’s Cottonwood vs. Sunflower Showdown will begin at 1:30 p.m. at their respective schools. The public is welcome to attend to cheer on your favorite school. Garfield and MacArthur will also begin a competion of their own on Friday.
