City Commission Meets, Approves Interceptor Line

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday evening at 6:30pm for their regularly scheduled meeting. Among the items on the agenda, the commission adopted Ordinance 4457 which revises th e Parking ordinance.This ordinance defines what constitutes what improved surfaces, and where individuals can park. Parking surfaces shall be of concrete, asphalt, or 4 inches of gravel. Individuals can park in the side and back yard if there is a compliant parking space, or is hidden by a privacy fence. Only 40% of the front yard cn be in use by parking spaces in a single family dwelling. No parking in another person, business or industrial area without the permission of the land owner. If the landowner allows parking on their land, the surface must be up to the standard of this code.
The commission approved the purchase of 2 ice machines for the Fire Department, and conveyed a stretch of North Kansas Avenue which has not been used in years back to KDOT, This will allow adjoning landowners the opportunity to purchase this road for right of way for future developments in the area.
The City Commissioners approved the expansion and addition to the Liberal Animal Shelter in the amount of $441,125.00. This will include a 50’x100′ foot buliding, several dog and cat kennels, and state of the art wash system. This will aid in the limiting of spreading of disease, will be climate controlled, will have additional holding capabilities, and so families can interact with their animal before adopting.
Also the Commission approved a new interceptor line across north Liberal from Western Avenue to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The current line is running at near capacity and with the addition of new schools, housing, and other developments, this project was in the plans, but moved up due to the urgency of the of th line.
