Businesses, Clinics, Schools Invited To Join SWMC In ??Thinking Pink

KSCB News - September 23, 2011 3:22 pm

Southwest Medical Center ’s Think Pink event is only one month away—are you ready? The Think Pink Challenge

is in its sixth year with the theme “Building Toward A Cure”. And this year, there are cash prizes for the winners.

“Our theme this year – ‘Building Toward A Cure’ – was selected because w e wanted something to go along with our current construction project here at Southwest Medical Center ,” said SWMC Think Pink Program Chairman and Radiology Director Kelly Denton.

Departments within Southwest Medical Center , local businesses, and physicians’ offices have taken part in this annual event each year and now, there is an additional division – schools.

“We hope that all of the local schools will get on board and help us in ‘Thinking Pink’”, said Southwest Medical Center Public Relations Director and Think Pink Committee member Nancy Kletecka. “This is a great way to encourage Breast Cancer Awareness as well as show support for those who have been affected by this disease. We would like to see the entire community get involved. The more we have—the better.”

The decorating contest associated with the annual program now has four official divisions: SWMC Departments, Physician’s Clinics, Schools and Businesses. Those who enter are judged on three very important criteria: use of pink, creativity and use of breast cancer awareness information.

“ It is important that everyone who participates realizes they are judged on all three criteria – not just one of the three,” Kletecka said adding that participants in year’s past have been very creative. “When people went in to Dr. Lucero’s office last year, it was really like going to a carnival. They had a ‘big top’ tent set up, staff was dressed in clown attire … the patients they saw that day loved it as well. Some who were there that day even wanted their photos taken with the employees. In the business division, Golden Plains Credit Union staff all wore matching pink t-shirts and the detective theme they used was right in line with our overall theme last year. Both Golden Plains and Dr. Lucero’s office utilized all three of the judging criteria very well.”

Kletecka and Denton are proud of those who take part in the annual Think Pink event.

“All of those who enter are winners because they are stepping up and making a difference with breast cancer education and awareness for the community – that is really what matters,” Kletecka said. “It’s not whether or not you get awarded a first place – it’s being a part of something that is very important.”

“We thank all those who participate and help bring awareness and educat ion to the community of Liberal,” Denton added.

E ntries into this year’s contest will be accepted until September 30, with the judging of those participating taking place October 19. Participants are encouraged to have their decorations up all that week in honor of breast cancer survivors and victims.

For more information or to enter this year’s contest, contact Kletecka at 629- 6335 or Denton at 629- 6286.
