BJ’s Strike Early in NBC Opener

KSCB News - July 25, 2015 8:22 am

When you are playing what amount to a Wichita area high school all star team, you are well served to strike early. That’s what the Bee Jays did in a 7-1 win over the Wichita Sluggers late Friday night into Saturday morning in their NBC opener at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.

The Sluggers showed their age in the first with two wild pitches and an error. Gavin Wehby scored in a wild pitch to give the Bee Jays a 1-0 lead. Nick Brooks line drive to left cut through the humidity and over the left field wall for a two run shot and a team leading seventh homer. Brent Williams sac fly to right in the second scored Luek Sherley to give the Jays a 4-0 lead in the second. A bloop single to right center helped the Sluggers score their only run in the fourth. Liberal answered in the bottom of the inning as Brooks sizzling ground ball to short went through the shortstop’s legs to score Williams and make it 5-1. Jared Huber singled to lead off the fifth and scored when birthday boy Jaylen Hubbard laced a single to right center. Wehby doubled down the left field line in the sixth and would score on a Brooks sac fly to make the score 7-1.

Tyler Wiedenfeld pitched eight strong innings allowing one run and newcomer Brady Muller pitched a scoreless ninth.

Liberal has won seven in a row and is 29-16. The face the Cape Girardeau, Missouri Capahas Sunday on 1270 and kscbnews.net. The Capahas beat the BJ’s in 2013 and 2006 at the NBC.
