Ashley’s Gem Salvages Split for Lady Saints

Brock Kappelmann - April 16, 2017 9:44 am

Suffering through her longest winless drought of her young Seward County career, Lady Saints ace Monique Ashley was back to herself Saturday, spinning a three hit shutout in a 3-0 Seward win in game one of the Lady Saints doubleheader against Colby before the Lady Trojans answered with a 6-2 win in game two to split the twinbill at Lady Saints Field.

Seward came out like gangbusters in game one, getting three straight hits to begin the game including an RBI single from Kristyna Garcia to put the Lady Saints up 1-0 before their first out of the game. A Colby error allowed Seward to score their second run of the inning and a sacrifice fly late in the inning off the bat of Leena Mortensen added another to make it a 3-0 game in favor of the Lady Saints after one.

It was a pitchers dual from there though as Seward’s Monique kept the Lady Trojans from finding the barrel and Colby’s Kylie Burnside shut the Lady Saints down after the quick start.

It remained a 3-0 game in favor of Seward all the way to the 7th where Colby managed to put their leadoff man on but nothing more as Ashley slammed the door on her fourth career shutout to give the Lady Saints a 3-0 win in the opener.

The two teams only combined for seven hits in the contest, four for Seward and three for Colby. Ashley was locked in from the start, allowing just the three hits while striking out six without walking a single batter to improve to 21-3 on the year.

Unfortunately the Lady Saints couldn’t carry the momentum into game two as they gave up three runs before their first at bats to fall behind the Trojans immediately 3-0.

A two out, two run double from Sydney Epp got Seward back to within one in the bottom half of the inning and that is the way things stayed to the 4th when Colby pushed across another run to make it a 4-2 game.

Seward couldn’t get anything going on offense after that, seeing nine go up and nine go down from the 4th to the 6th inning to keep it a 4-2 game.

Colby added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the 7th to make it 6-2, but they wouldn’t need them as Seward saw just five pitches in the bottom of the inning as the Lady Trojans wrapped up the 6-2 win to salvage the split.

Seward managed just three hits in the loss, none of which came after the 3rd inning, while Colby banged out 10 hits in the win. Garcia had two of Seward’s three knocks while Epp had both of the Lady Saints RBI’s. Ruby Gonzalez took the loss in the circle for Seward, allowing 10 hits and six runs, five earned, to fall to 9-4 on the year.

The split moves Seward to 37-15 on the year and 12-5 in Jayhawk West play while Colby goes to 25-15 overall and 9-7 in league action.

Next time out the Lady Saints will get their first crack at #1 and undefeated Butler as they take on the defending National Champion Grizzlies Monday at East Park in El Dorado in a 2:00 first pitch.
