Area Eighth Graders win free trip to Energy Camp

Joe Denoyer - March 14, 2017 10:09 am

Four area eighth graders were awarded a free trip to the 2017 Energy Camp by TCEC on March 10 and 13. Twenty-three students from area schools applied and four were selected through an application process. The winners received an all-expense paid trip to Energy Camp at Red Rock Canyon in Hinton, Oklahoma.
Each of the winners were presented their award at a surprise school assembly. The delegates TCEC will send to Energy Camp are:
  • Blaze Elm, Hardesty Junior High
  • Benjamin Hernandez, Hardesty Junior High
  • Amy Loya, Guymon Junior High
  • Natalie Watson, Guymon Junior High
The winners will spend May 30 – June 2 participating in youth leadership activities, learning what it’s like to be a lineman, learning the co-op way and making friends through small group interactions and competitions. Campers will also get the opportunity to participate in volleyball tournaments, swimming, hiking and a ropes course. They will experience the exciting world of electricity, climb poles and watch a co-op crew at work. Plus, they will have the opportunity to build their own cooperative by working with new friends and honing their leadership skills.
Bringing the sixth Cooperative Principle of “Cooperation Among Cooperatives” to life, TCEC invited two judges from other cooperatives to independently judge the competition. The judges were Jill Bramlet with North Plains Electric Cooperative in Perryton, Texas and Rae Gorman with Pioneer Electric Cooperative in Ulysses, Kansas.
“Energy camp offers eighth graders an unforgettable experience,” said Chris Purdy, vice president of Member Solutions, at TCEC, “They will learn about leadership and the co-op way while having fun and making friends.”
He added TCEC is proud to announce Hana Kimberling, communications specialist with the cooperative, will be going with the delegation as a camp counselor this year.
