Accidents Up For Unlicensed Drivers

KSCB News - August 16, 2010 12:00 am

Department of Transportation records show

that for the past decade, 10 percent of fatal accidents in Kansas

involved people without licenses.

Republican state Sen. Les Donovan of Wichita says it’s an

outrage when someone dies in a crash involving a driver who

shouldn’t be behind the wheel.

But The Wichita Eagle reports that Donovan acknowledges there

are no easy answers to fixing the problem, especially with the

state’s budget problems.

Former legislator Phil Journey is now a Sedgwick County District

Court judge. He says the immediate reaction would be to impound

more vehicles, raise fines and put people in jail.

But he and Donovan agree those aren’t workable solutions and

also can be unfair.
