A Split Gives the Bee Jays the Series Win

KSCB News - June 13, 2011 7:14 am

A split gave the Liberal Bee Jays a series win (2-1) over the Derby Twins Sunday afternoon and evening at Brent Gould Field. Derby took game one 9-4 before a 6-1 BJ win in game two.

In game one, the Twins pounded out 14 hits and scored four in the third, one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth to win the seven inning game handily. Liberal mustered only six hits but two were out of the ballpark by Texas-Arlington’s Ryan Walker (1) and Lubbock Christian’s Richard Bohlken (2). Yavapai’s Robbie Ingram (1-2) pitched the first four innings allowing five runs for the loss.

In game two, Nicholls State lefty Patrick Shreve (2-0) kept Derby hitters guessing with a mystifying changeup. The lanky 6’5" southpaw from Mobile, Alabama struck out eight and allowed just five hits in the win. The Bee Jays plated single runs in the first, second, and fourth but left nine runner on base the first four innings. The "boys in blue" broke through with three in the sixth buoyed by home runs from Texas-San Antonio’s Riley Good (2) and San Diego’s Reyn Nagamine (2). Nagamine was 3-4 with three RBI’s. Texas-Arlington’s Greg McCall was 2-3 with a double.

It was the final game for Kelby Tomlinson with the Bee Jays after he was drafted in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants last week. He finishes 9-24 with a homer and four RBI’s for the Bee Jays. Last year the Elgin, Oklahoma native hit .340 with one homer, 30 RBI’s, 13 doubles, four triples, and 42 stolen bases in 44 attempts. He played two years at Seward and one full season (2010) and two weeks of this season with the Bee Jays.

Liberal is 9-2 overall and 2-2 in the Jayhawk League while the Twins are 6-2 and 3-2 in the Jayhawk League. All five of Derby’s league games have been on the road.

Liberal hosts Hays Tuesday and Wednesday night. Tuesday’s buyout sponsor is the High Plains Daily Leader and Times Newspaper.
