Katie Horyna to Transfer to Emporia State from D-I Abilene Christian

March 30, 2022- Women’s basketball coach Toby Wynn has announced that transfer Katie Horyna will be attending Emporia State next year and playing for the Lady Hornets. She joins transfer Faith Paramore and early signees Stevie Stinchcomb and Audrey Beaty in the Lady Hornets recruiting class for next season.
Horyna is a 5-9 guard from Liberal, Kan. and will be transferring to Emporia State from Division I Abilene Christian. She played in 44 games over two seasons for the Wildcats. She shot .438 from the three-point line as a COVID freshman in 2021-22. She had 36 assists and 18 steals in 27 games as a true freshman in 2020-21.
“We are very excited to be adding Katie to the Lady Hornet Basketball Program,” said Wynn. “I have known Katie and her family since my time back in Liberal and Emporia State University and our community are going to really enjoy getting to know her and them as well.”
She was a Third-Team All-Kansas selection by the Topeka Capital Journal as a senior at Liberal HS in 2019-20 and was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She was a three-time All-Class 5A selection. She averaged 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game in her high school career. Liberal was 85-8 in her four years with a 68-3 record her final three seasons.
“She is a very skilled player that plays the game with competitive greatness and a winning mentality,” said Wynn. “Katie will also bring positive energy to her teammates and a tremendous work ethic to improve and get better every single day. Lady Hornet Basketball is very fortunate to have her and this definitely strengthens our roster.”
Horyna has a connection with Emporia State as her uncle Eric Martin was an All-MIAA and honorable mention All-American offensive lineman for the Hornets from 2000-03.
The Lady Hornets return three starters from last year’s team that went 15-14. It was the 26th consecutive winning season for Emporia State, the longest active streak among women’s basketball programs in the MIAA.
