Bee Jays Hold Down Hays

KSCB News - June 15, 2011 7:08 am

This was the kind of win this Bee Jay team needed. They know they can score runs. They’ve scored 22 in a game and 11 in an inning already this season. But Tuesday night at Brent Gould Field, it was the pitching that pulled Liberal to a 4-3 win over the Hays Larks.

Campbellsville right hander Rusty Devitt improved to 3-0 by pitching six strong innings. He struck out nine including the first six batters he faced. After the BJ’s allowed to runs in the seventh, Hawaii’s Brent Harrison pitched a scoreless eighth and Wichita State closer Cale Elam pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save with the BJ’s.

Offensively, both teams mustered four hits a piece. Liberal scored all four runs in the third after the Larks plated a run in the top of the third. Texas-San Antonio’s Riley Good singled home a run, Lubbock Christian’s Richard Bohlken doubled home two runs. Seward’s Jake Barrios singled home a run in his first game with the BJ’s.

The BJ’s are 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the Jayhawk League. Hays is 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Jayhawk League.

The Bee Jays host the Larks tonight at 7 p.m. on Brent Gould Field. J&R Sand is the buyout sponsor for tonight’s game. Mike Hargrove’s jackets he wore when he managed the Indians and Orioles as well as shirts he wore when he managed the Indians, Orioles, and Mariners will be given away at the game.

The game airs on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net. at 6:45 with a 7 p.m. start.
