Saints Smash Busters; Lady Saints Shocked

Sunday, February 26, 2012 12:33 AM

It was certainly a tale of two completely opposite stories Saturday night in the Perryman Center in Garden City for Seward County fans.  The Lady Saints played first and quite frankly just didnt have it.  Seward started slow, but was down just seven at the half.  The second half was one to forget.  Garden City scored 56 points in the final 20 minutes and went on to beat the Lady Saints 88-68, stunning the gals in green . Ashlynn Knoll and Kayla Thomas were the only Seward players to reach double figures as each finished with 12 points while Garden had four in double figures and three players with 18 points or more.  The Saints were on the other end of the spectrum.  Seward dominated their game with the sliding Garden City Broncbusters from the opening tip. The Saints took an early lead and never looked back.  They led 35-11 at the half as just one Garden City player had a field goal make in the first 20 minutes.  The second half didn’t go quite as well as the Busters heated up offensively, but the Saints big first half lead was enough to allow them to coast to a 75-55 win.  Seward dominated down low as Daveon Boardingham finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds and Irvin Hollinger finished with 18 and 9.

The Lady Saints fall to 21-6 and 10-4 in conference play and will now need an upset win over undefeated Hutchinson and help elsewhere in the league if they are to sneak into the #2 slot from the West for the upcoming Region VI Playoffs.

The Saints remain the top team in the Jayhawk West as they move to 23-5 overall and 11-3 in league play.  Seward remains in front of Hutchinson by one game and will have a chance to clinch the conference title on Wednesday if they can hold court against 9th place Butler and have Cloud County knock off Hutch in Concordia.

Seward will host Butler Wednesday night in the Greenhouse for Sophomore Recognition night in the Saints and Lady Saints sophomores final regular season home game of their career.  The Lady Saints will tip at 6:00 with the Saints tossing it up at 8:00.  Free tickets are available thanks to our buyout sponsor Sharp, McQueen, PA. at their Liberal office or at Pizza Hut and Express Lane.
